  Backyard Drainage, Retaining Wall & Paver Patio Transformation

  Correcting Site Problems, Restoring the Lawn, and Creating a Lasting Outdoor Living SpaceThe Schuffs came to Idea Scapes with a backyard that was difficult to use and affected by several interconnected problems. The lawn was struggling, drainage and erosion were ongoing concerns, and a steep backyard slope had been made more challenging by a retaining wall installed during a previous pool project. Their goal was to create an attractive, low-maintenance outdoor space where they could relax, entertain, and enjoy the backyard with family and friends. As we explored options for the area, the project developed into a larger transformation centered around a new paver patio and improvements to the surrounding property. This approximately $125,000 backyard project ultimately brought together reconstruction of the existing retaining wall, construction of an additional retaining wall, drainage improvements, grading and site corrections, paver hardscaping, custom steps, landscape lighting, decorative rock beds, lawn restoration, and other outdoor living improvements into one coordinated project. Beyond the immediate patio area, additional grading and sod installation were completed throughout the yard to improve drainage, restore disturbed areas, and create a more usable and cohesive finished landscape. Before constructing the new patio, we evaluated the existing retaining wall and identified important construction details that had been missed during the original installation. Building the new improvements over a wall with questionable long-term performance would have placed the new investment at risk. After reviewing our findings with the homeowners, the decision was made to rebuild the retaining wall properly before moving forward. As construction progressed, additional hidden site conditions were uncovered that required revisions to the original plan. Rather than ignoring or simply working around those conditions, we documented what we found, explained the available options, and received the homeowners' approval before proceeding with each change. The completed project addressed underlying drainage, grade, and structural concerns while creating a more functional and enjoyable backyard. The rebuilt retaining wall provides a stronger foundation for the improvements above it, while the additional wall and custom steps helped manage grade changes and improve movement through the space. The new paver patio created a comfortable gathering area, landscape lighting extended the use and appearance of the space into the evening, and decorative rock beds, drainage improvements, grading, and sod installation helped complete the surrounding landscape. This project reflects the way Idea Scapes approaches complex landscape and outdoor living work: understand the property first, address underlying problems before covering them up, coordinate the different systems involved, and keep the client informed as conditions evolve.
